Asante Akyem is a village about 3KM off the Sureso-Samreboi road and also about 22KM from Samreboi, in the Wassa Amenfi West Municipal, Western Region, Ghana.

The village and its surrounding communities have no electricity, no treated water, no healthcare facility, deplorable school structure, deplorable roads, etc, compelling Management of Samartex to initiate a monthly medical outreach, which commenced on February 24, 2021.

The outreach team comprised 5 medical staff, including the Resident Doctor of Samartex Hospital, Doctor Tijani, started with a health talk, before proceeding to actual screening and consultation. A total of 87 patients were seen, with varying health and medical conditions. 43 male, 44 female, 26 of them were children (0-12years). 

Some patients were treated on the spot and administered medication. Others with chronic medical conditions were counseled to be followed up at Samartex Hospital. Those with surgical conditions such as hernia were referred to come for free surgeries at Samartex Hospital. 

Aside from the medical outreach, Samartex donated 20 bags of cement to start a classroom block project by the community. Samartex will help with wood for the roofing and cladding as well as furniture.

The people of Asante Akyem expressed their deepest gratitude to the Management of Samartex, for the unprecedented, initiative to the village and surrounding communities.

The medical outreach will be continuous monthly and eventually, all community members will be enrolled in the NHIS, as part of plans to ensure the sustainability of this very important initiative.
